If you have a Chromebook that randomly keeps turning off leaving you frustrated, you are not alone. Several people face the same problem and are looking for a solution. In this guide, I will try to explain some of the most common reasons why your Chromebook keeps turning off.
A random shutdown can be due to several reasons. It may be due to a software bug or a hardware problem. There could be a few other reasons. Here’s a list of some of the reasons and solutions. Read this carefully and try to find out why your Chromebook keeps turning off.
Overheating
If your Chromebook overheats and the temperature goes beyond the limit, it will automatically turn off. If overheating is the problem, you need to examine the laptop carefully and clean all the blocked vents. Blocked vents can interrupt proper cooling. Check for dust buildup in the vents and properly clean them.
Battery Issue
Sometimes unexpected shutdowns can be due to battery issues. Before doing anything else, you can remove the battery and clean it. You should also clean the battery compartment. Now insert the battery again. Turn off the Chromebook and check if the unexpected shutdown is still there.
You can also check the Chromebook’s battery health. Press Ctrl + Alt + T keyboard shortcut to open Crosh Shell. Here type battery_test in the terminal and press Enter on the keyboard. It will show the Battery health row. If battery health is low, it needs a replacement.
If your laptop’s battery is faulty, it may show a remaining battery percentage but will stop powering your laptop after a certain time. Go to the service center and get it checked. Get the battery replaced if it is too old or malfunctioning.
Hardware Problem
Sometimes any other hardware problem can also be a culprit. It may be due to faulty RAM or another issue in the motherboard. If the battery is not an issue, get it checked for other hardware-related issues.
Software Glitch
Sometimes software bugs can also be a reason for the unexpected shutdowns. In this case, you can update your Chromebook to the latest version of Chrome OS. To update ChromeOS, Go to ChromeOS. Here check for updates.
If required, you can also reset everything to factory settings. Go to Settings > Advanced > Reset settings and select the Reset button. Make sure you take backup of your important data before factory reset.
Wrap Up
You can clean vents to avoid overheating and keep the software updated. But for battery and hardware-related issues, you will have to visit the service center. I also advise you to go to an expert for a proper checkup. They can provide more specific guidance.
