Sony has launched the RX10 V in India, its latest all-in-one bridge camera and the fifth-generation model in the RX10 series. The camera combines a 20.1-megapixel 1-inch stacked sensor with a ZEISS 24-600mm lens, advanced subject recognition, and 4K video recording at up to 120fps.
The RX10 V is aimed at photographers and videographers who want a long zoom range without carrying multiple lenses. Its 24-600mm equivalent lens covers everything from wide-angle shots to distant subjects, while the constant F2.4-4.0 aperture gives it more flexibility than many conventional superzoom cameras.
The integrated lens also includes optical image stabilisation. Sony says it can focus for macro photography from around 3cm at 24mm, while tele-macro shooting is possible from around 72cm at 600mm.
The camera features a 1.0-type Exmor RS CMOS stacked sensor with approximately 20.1 effective megapixels. It is paired with Sony’s BIONZ XR image processor. Sony says the combination is designed to reduce noise at mid-to-high ISO settings, especially when shooting indoors or in low-light conditions. The camera supports ISO 100 to 12,800, with an expandable ISO 64 option for still photography.
There are also 12 Creative Look presets, which can be customised, along with an updated D-Range Optimizer. The latter can be adjusted up to Level 8 and is designed to retain detail across bright and dark areas. Higher settings can also help bring out shadow detail when shooting against strong backlight.
The RX10 V also gets a dedicated AI processing unit for its autofocus system. Its Real-time Recognition AF can identify humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains and airplanes. Sony has also added human pose estimation, which can help track people even when their faces are partially obscured or they are facing away from the camera.
The camera can perform AF and AE calculations up to 60 times per second and supports continuous shooting at up to 30fps with full autofocus and exposure tracking. A Continuous Shooting Speed Boost feature also lets users change the burst rate while shooting.
For a bridge camera, this is one of the more significant upgrades. The long 600mm reach makes the RX10 V naturally suited to wildlife, birds and sports, where subject tracking and burst performance are often more important than having extremely high megapixel counts.
The camera supports 4K recording at up to 120fps. This allows 4K footage to be slowed down by up to five times for slow-motion playback.
It also supports Active Mode stabilisation, S-Cinetone and S-Log3. Users can load up to 16 custom LUTs and monitor the footage with the LUT applied while recording in Log mode.
Sony has included AI-based Auto Framing as well. The feature can automatically adjust the framing around a recognised subject, which could be useful for solo creators and video production where the camera is mounted at a distance.
The camera can also record digital audio through the Multi Interface Shoe when used with compatible microphones. A Shot Mark function allows still images to be extracted from video footage.
The RX10 V uses a 0.5-inch Quad-VGA OLED electronic viewfinder with approximately 3.68 million dots and 0.78x magnification.
There is also a 3-inch touchscreen LCD with approximately 1.62 million dots and an adjustable-angle design. The controls and grip follow Sony’s Alpha mirrorless camera layout, while the multi-selector provides eight-direction operation.
Connectivity includes Wi-Fi on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type-C and micro HDMI. The USB-C port also supports up to 4K 30p live streaming.
Sony’s Creators’ App can be used to transfer photos and videos to a smartphone or cloud storage, remotely control the camera, and update its software and features.
The camera uses Sony’s NP-FZ100 battery and is rated for up to approximately 630 still images when using the LCD, or 570 shots through the electronic viewfinder. Sony says this represents an improvement of around 50% or more compared with the previous model.
