Meta Launches Muse Code AI Agent to Help Developers Manage Large Codebases

Meta has introduced Muse Code, a new AI-powered coding agent designed to help developers work on large and complex software projects. The tool is currently available in beta and marks another step in Meta’s broader push to strengthen its position in the fast-growing AI software development market.

The launch comes as AI-powered coding assistants have become one of the most competitive areas in artificial intelligence, with companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google rapidly expanding their offerings. By introducing Muse Code, Meta is signaling that it wants to become a serious player in developer-focused AI tools.

Unlike traditional AI coding assistants that mainly generate snippets of code or answer programming questions, Muse Code is designed to complete full software engineering workflows across large repositories.

According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the AI agent can plan code changes, write new code, validate the results, and manage complex engineering tasks from start to finish.

Muse Code is powered by Muse Spark, Meta’s coding model introduced earlier. Developers can install the tool with a single command, after which it integrates into the terminal to assist with software development tasks.

The most notable feature is its ability to divide large assignments into multiple smaller jobs. Meta says Muse Code launches multiple AI sub-agents whenever it encounters a large task. Each sub-agent works independently inside isolated worktrees, allowing different features to be developed simultaneously without affecting the developer’s primary working directory.

According to Zuckerberg, this approach prevents conflicts between parallel tasks. During internal testing, the system reportedly built six separate game features at the same time without code collisions.

This multi-agent workflow reflects an emerging trend in AI software engineering, where autonomous agents collaborate to solve complex programming challenges instead of relying on a single AI model.

The launch also shows Meta’s growing ambition in AI-assisted software development. OpenAI’s Codex, Anthropic’s Claude Code, and Google’s Gemini-powered coding tools have already gained significant traction among developers. Meta has largely focused on consumer AI experiences and advertising technologies, making its presence in developer tools relatively limited until now.

Muse Code gives Meta a direct competitor in this rapidly expanding category.

Alexandr Wang, who leads Meta Superintelligence Labs, said the company believes Muse Code can offer strong value, particularly in terms of cost. According to Wang, many developers and businesses may find the platform attractive because it aims to provide capable AI coding assistance at a lower operating cost than some competing solutions.

Muse Code is another example of Meta expanding beyond AI features for its social platforms. Over the past year, the company has significantly increased its AI investments, building larger language models, hiring top AI researchers, and investing billions of dollars into AI infrastructure.

In June, Meta also entered the enterprise AI market by introducing an AI agent designed for customer service and business support. Muse Code extends that strategy into software engineering, a market expected to see strong enterprise adoption as companies look to automate more of the development process.

AI coding assistants are evolving from simple autocomplete tools into systems capable of handling entire development workflows. If Muse Code performs well in real-world projects, it could help developers spend less time on repetitive engineering work and more time on architecture, design, and problem solving.

Meta still has ground to cover against established coding assistants from OpenAI and Anthropic, but Muse Code demonstrates that the company is accelerating its efforts to compete in one of AI’s fastest-growing segments.

For developers working with large repositories, the ability to automatically split complex tasks across multiple AI agents could become one of the platform’s biggest differentiators, especially if Meta succeeds in offering comparable performance at a more affordable price.
