ASUS has unveiled the ROG Ally X20 at Computex 2026 as part of the company’s 20th anniversary celebrations for the Republic of Gamers brand. The new handheld gaming PC brings several notable upgrades over the existing ROG Ally X, including an OLED display, redesigned controls, and improved storage expansion.
However, ASUS is not selling the handheld on its own. At least for now, the ROG Ally X20 will only be available as a bundle with the new ROG Xreal R1 Edition 20 AR glasses.
The company has not revealed pricing yet.
The biggest upgrade is the display. The ROG Ally X20 becomes the first ASUS handheld gaming PC to feature an OLED panel. It has a larger 7.4-inch screen with Full HD resolution, a 16:9 aspect ratio, and variable refresh rate support from 30Hz to 120Hz.
ASUS has also significantly increased brightness. The display can reach up to 1,400 nits and supports Dolby Vision, VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1000, and 100% DCI-P3 color coverage. The screen is protected by Corning Glass with an anti-reflective coating.
ASUS has retained the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor paired with 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. This means buyers should not expect a performance boost compared to the current ROG Ally X.
ASUS appears to have focused on improving the overall experience. One of the most important changes is the introduction of TMR thumbsticks. TMR technology is considered the next step after Hall Effect sensors and is designed to offer better durability while reducing the risk of stick drift over time.
The company has also redesigned the ABXY buttons and updated the D-pad. Users can switch the D-pad between 4-way and 8-way modes by lifting and rotating it, a feature that could be particularly useful for fighting games and retro titles.
ASUS has also upgraded the microSD slot to microSD Express, allowing for much faster storage expansion. Nintendo made a similar move with the Switch 2, and it is likely to become the new standard for gaming handhelds going forward.
Connectivity options include USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, USB4 with DisplayPort 2.1 support, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.4. The handheld continues to pack an 80Wh battery with support for 68W fast charging.
The design has also received some changes. The ROG Ally X20 features a translucent shell, gold-accented buttons, upgraded RGB lighting rings, and new grip materials that ASUS says are more durable than before.
Alongside the handheld, ASUS is bundling the ROG Xreal R1 Edition 20 gaming glasses. The AR glasses use micro-OLED displays to create a virtual 171-inch screen with a 240Hz refresh rate and a 0.01ms response time. They also include adjustable dimming levels to block ambient light and can connect directly to the handheld through USB-C.
While the glasses sound impressive, their inclusion raises an interesting question. The ROG Ally X20’s new OLED display is arguably its biggest upgrade, yet buyers are encouraged to use the handheld with an external display solution.
The bundle approach may also increase the final price. The standard ROG Xreal R1 glasses already carry a premium price tag, and ASUS has yet to reveal how much the complete package will cost.
The ROG Ally X20 is expected to launch during the holiday season. Until ASUS announces pricing, it remains unclear whether the OLED upgrade and bundled AR glasses will make it a compelling alternative to existing handheld gaming PCs.
