Instagram has officially introduced Instants, a new feature focused on real-time photo sharing with close friends and mutual followers. The feature was first spotted in testing back in February, and went live in select regions a few weeks ago. The company has now started rolling it out globally within Instagram.
Instants is designed for quick and unedited photo sharing. The feature lets users capture and send photos instantly through Instagram DMs using a new stack icon placed at the bottom-right corner of the inbox. Users can also access the same experience through the dedicated Instants app.
The feature works differently from regular Instagram Stories or posts. Photos can only be captured in real time, which means users cannot upload images from their gallery. Instagram is also restricting editing options before sharing. Users can only add captions before sending the photo.
Once viewed, the photo disappears automatically. Even unopened content becomes unavailable after 24 hours.
Users can share Instants with their Close Friends list or mutual followers. Recipients can react with emojis, reply directly, or send Instants back. All replies are delivered through Instagram DMs.
Instagram has also added a stacked preview layout inside the inbox to make Instants easier to access. Users can send multiple Instants one after another using a dedicated capture button. There is also an undo option that allows users to remove an Instant before it gets viewed.
Even though the content disappears from chats, Instagram stores all shared Instants in a private archive for up to one year. Users can later use this archive to create Recap Stories by combining selected Instants into regular Instagram Stories.
The company has also added several limitations to keep the experience focused on quick and temporary sharing. Users cannot upload photos from their gallery or edit content after capture. Screenshots and screen recording are also blocked inside Instants. Archive deletion only works if the content has not been opened.
Instagram is also introducing a Snooze mode for Instants. Users can temporarily pause incoming Instants by holding the inbox stack and swiping right. Swiping left enables the feature again.
For safety and privacy, Instants uses Instagram’s existing moderation tools, including block, mute, restrict, and reporting options. The company says all content will continue to follow Instagram Community Standards, with automated systems detecting harmful or violating content.
Teen safety features are also included by default. Instants works with Teen Accounts and Family Center without requiring additional setup. Teen users will continue getting protections like shared daily time limits, Sleep Mode between 10 PM and 7 AM, parental notifications when downloading the app, and access to moderation tools.
Instagram is currently testing the standalone Instants app in select countries. The app offers direct camera access for faster sharing while remaining fully connected with the main Instagram account. Instants shared through the app will appear inside Instagram, and vice versa.
The feature is now rolling out globally inside Instagram, while the standalone Instants app remains limited to select regions for now.
