Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and this release is bigger than a usual yearly Call of Duty launch. The game is finally coming to Nintendo hardware after more than a decade.
Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. This is the first mainline Call of Duty game to arrive on a Nintendo platform since 2013. It also confirms Microsoft’s promise to bring the franchise to Nintendo platforms after its Activision acquisition.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version is being developed natively by Infinity Ward with support from Digital Legends. That is important because many players expected a cloud-only version or a heavily cut-down port. Instead, Activision says the game is being optimized specifically for Switch 2 hardware.
The game is also skipping PS4 and Xbox One completely, and we already knew about it. This makes it the first current-generation-only Call of Duty title. Activision has also confirmed that Call of Duty: Warzone support for older consoles will end later this year.
The campaign follows Private Park, a young South Korean soldier facing combat for the first time during a North Korean invasion. The story will also take players to locations like New York, Paris, and Mumbai.
Captain Price returns as well, but this time he is operating outside official systems while chasing a dangerous weapon that could trigger a much larger conflict. Infinity Ward promises the usual mix of cinematic action, covert missions, and large-scale battles.
Multiplayer remains the main attraction for many players, and Infinity Ward says it has upgraded the gunplay system with better aiming, improved weapon handling, more realistic audio, and smarter combat awareness. Weapons will also react more naturally depending on movement and surroundings.
Modern Warfare 4 will launch with 12 multiplayer maps. Fan-favorite modes like Search and Destroy and Domination are returning, along with new modes that will be revealed later. DMZ extraction mode is also making a comeback.
PC players will get additional performance optimizations, although Activision has not shared hardware requirements yet.
One surprising detail is that Modern Warfare 4 will not launch on Game Pass on day one. Many Xbox players expected future Activision titles to arrive directly on the service after Microsoft’s acquisition, but that is not happening with this release.
