Bungie Announces Final Destiny 2 Content Update, Live-Service Support Ending in 2026

Destiny 2 Content Update

Bungie has announced that Destiny 2 will receive its final live-service content update on June 9, 2026. This brings an end to almost nine years of continuous updates for the popular shooter.

The studio revealed the news in a new blog post, confirming that the final update will serve as a farewell celebration for longtime fans. Bungie says the update will include several player-requested additions along with story changes designed to wrap up remaining loose ends in the Destiny 2 universe.

According to Bungie, the final update is being developed as a “collection of love letters” for the community that supported the game since its launch in 2017.

The company said it reached this decision after the release of Destiny 2: The Final Shape, adding that the Destiny universe is now ready to move beyond Destiny 2 itself.

“For almost twelve years, we have had the joy and honor to explore the Destiny universe with you all,” Bungie said in its statement. “While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2.”

The announcement comes during a difficult period for Bungie. Since being acquired by Sony in 2022 for $3.6 billion, the studio has gone through multiple rounds of layoffs, management changes, and criticism around the performance of its recent projects.

Sony recently confirmed a major impairment charge related to Bungie after the underperformance of Destiny 2 and the disappointing launch of Marathon.

Before creating Destiny, Bungie was widely known for developing the Halo series for Microsoft.

Bungie clarified that Destiny 2 will remain playable even after live-service updates stop. The original Destiny will also continue to stay online. However, the studio did not reveal any new Destiny project or sequel. Instead, Bungie says it will now focus on exploring future projects.

“Destiny 2 has been our home for many, many years,” the company said. “As we look ahead, our commitment remains the same: to make games we, and you, are excited to play.”

The announcement closes a chapter of one of the biggest live-service shooter games of the past decade. Since its launch, Destiny 2 has received multiple expansions, seasonal updates, raids, events, and gameplay overhauls across two console generations.
