Microsoft has officially released Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition for macOS. This is a big moment for Mac gamers because it has been many years since a major Age of Empires game launched on Apple platforms.
The classic real-time strategy game originally received its Definitive Edition remaster back in 2019 for Windows PCs. Since then, the game has also arrived on Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Now, Mac users can finally join the experience officially.
For older gamers, this launch also feels nostalgic. Earlier Age of Empires games and even Age of Mythology had Mac versions in the early 2000s. But Microsoft stopped bringing the franchise to Apple platforms for many years. This new release could be a sign that the company is becoming more open to supporting macOS again.
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is considered one of the best remasters of a classic strategy game. It improves almost everything from the original release while still keeping the same gameplay fans loved decades ago. The game includes upgraded visuals, modern controls, multiplayer support, new game modes, and all the iconic historical campaigns.
The macOS version also includes several major expansions in the base package. Players get access to Lords of the West, Dynasties of India, and Dawn of the Dukes. These expansions add new civilizations, campaigns, and gameplay content. Additional DLC packs are also available separately for players who want even more civilizations and stories.
Microsoft and Feral Interactive have also optimized the game for Apple Silicon Macs. The game runs natively on Apple’s ARM-based chips, which should help performance significantly compared to older emulation methods. According to the system requirements, players need macOS 15.7 or newer, an Apple M1 chip or A18 Pro processor, 8GB RAM, and at least 16GB of storage space.
Microsoft has not confirmed whether the macOS version supports crossplay with Windows, Xbox, and PlayStation players. Crossplay is already available between the other platforms, so Mac players will hope the same support arrives here too.
The game is currently available through Steam and the Feral Interactive Store. A Mac App Store release is also planned for later this year. Existing Steam owners of the game can access the macOS version without buying it again, which is good news for longtime fans.
