As per reports, YouTube is testing a new feature similar to Community Notes on X. The company is running a pilot program to test the feature and see if it will be helpful on the video-sharing platform. YouTube has also not decided on the name of the feature.
An X user with username @ianzelbo shared screenshots confirming how notes will be shown under YouTube videos.
X, formerly Twitter, added a Community Notes feature to allow contributors to add an explanation under a misleading or confusing post. It is a valuable tool to discourage misinformation on the platform. If the moderator approves the note, it is shown under the post on X.
In the same way, YouTube will allow certain users to add notes under inaccurate or confusing videos. So, other users will know if the video has misinformation or confusing expansion. Similar to X, the note added by a user will be reviewed by others to ensure it is right and helpful before it appears under the video.

YouTube has also added a page in the Support section explaining how the feature works. The page explains that the video must include notes written by the user. It won’t accept notes copied from any other source. The note must also include a link to the source. The note must be written in neutral language and should offer important context that’s not available in the video.
Not all users can write Notes. There’s a minimum eligibility criteria before one can write notes in videos. The user must have a YouTube channel created six or more months ago and hasn’t received any Community Guidelines strike in the past 12 months. The user mustn’t own a channel having multiple owners or should have a supervised account. It means people who manage brand accounts aren’t eligible to write notes.
Now that misinformation is on the rise on social media platforms including YouTube, Notes will be really helpful and will help users make more informed decisions. It will also encourage user participation and discourage misinformation on the platform. There’s still a risk of users adding biased or incorrect notes, so raters will have an important role to play. If used properly, YouTube’s Notes feature has the potential to combat misinformation and improve the overall user experience.
