PlayStation 5 Surpasses 50 Million Units Sold Worldwide

In a remarkable milestone for Sony, the PlayStation 5 has soared past the 50 million unit mark in global sales since its launch in November 2020. It hints that PlayStation 5 sales saw a significant boost in sales during the recent holiday shopping season. The achievement underscores the global success of the PS5, driven by an enthusiastic community, a stellar lineup of games, and Sony’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of gaming innovation.

Jim Ryan, President, and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the global PlayStation community, stating, “Achieving this PS5 sales milestone is a testament to the unwavering support of the global PlayStation community and their passion for the incredible experiences created by the talented developers from PlayStation Studios and our partners.”

Sony unveiled a redesigned and slimmer version of the console back in November. It has also contributed to the PlayStation 5’s impressive sales figures. Some of the console-exclusive games such as Spider-Man 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3 also helped in sales.

It is worth noting that the PlayStation 5 reached 50 million sales one week slower than the PlayStation 4. But that’s still an impressive sales record considering how initial months of PlayStation 5 sales were hindered by supply chain challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

As per a report based on data from Ampere Analysis, Sony has also outsold the Xbox Series X and S. Although Microsoft didn’t release official sales numbers, Ampere estimated that Microsoft sold 7.6 million of Xbox Series X and S units this year. Sony is much ahead with 22.5 million units sold in 2023.
