At the end of June this year, Google added a 60 Tbps fiber optic undersea cable between US and Japan with 5 other members of a FASTER consortium. Now, it has moved a step ahead and added a new 26 Tbps (26 terabits per second) cable linking that faster cable in Japan to Taiwan where Google has its largest data center in the Asia.
Google says that this new cable will help Google products and services load quickly across the region. It will also improve the reliability and consistency of this speedier experience. Google also took care of the security of this cable and built it outside of tsunami zones to avoid network outages related to natural disasters.
Want to know how faster are 26 terabits per second? Google explained this in a simple manner. “Every 15 seconds, every person in Taiwan could send a selfie of themselves to a friend in Japan.” It accounts for 138 Billion selfies a day. That is a huge number.
Now the cable is live and you should see the performance improvements soon. Google products will load faster.
