On one hand Nokia is the largest selling headset in the whole world. On the other, smartphones are the fastest selling devices. The smartphone market is currently under the grip of Research in Motion’s BlackBerry and Apple’s iPhone. To counter the success of other smartphones, Nokia has made a deal with Microsoft Corporation. The desperation of both the parties to enter a deal could be underscored by the fact that Nokia dropped its plan of coming up with its own operating system. From now onward, Nokia’s new range of smartphones would be compatible with Microsoft based operating system.
New lines in the old story
The deal is multifaceted and involves producing a range of hardware designs and other applications. Under the new deal Nokia Maps would be available and compatible with Windows Phone 7. The Nokia OVI Maps are very famous and useful service. Nokia’s Map service is among the best in the market.
The smartphone market has expanded its reach and grasp in most unexpected ways. Designers have been constantly trying to come up with a device that captures the multi dimensional need of the market. With the advent and the launch of Windows 7 up ecosystem, the designers will have a broader platform to work on.
Change is good
The fact that this new deal will lead to a newer platform is good news for the market, especially for Nokia, which has been looking for a breakthrough in the smartphone business. It is indeed a big player globally, but its success has not been as impressive as it might have expected it to be.
In the past few years the market has developed a different version of competition. It can be called a duopoly, where two competitors solely focus on each other. American based Apple and Microsoft are the two best examples of this.
First Microsoft captured the market with its operating system ‘Windows’. Later when pushed by Apple based ‘Linux’. Microsoft significantly improved its Operating system, so much so that it’s latest OS “Windows 7’; looks more or less a copy of Apple based OS.
The current stream of Mobile based OS follows the benchmark set by Google’s Android. Under the Google model the operating system is functional over a range of devices. This not only allows for greater customization but also leads to greater innovation. On the other hand there is also an Apple model.
Apple has kept the entire market in a tight leash. It controls the whole user experience. The experiment has worked in Apple’s favor, but it does limit the number of devices when it comes to functionality. Right now we are looking at a future where all three devices will support the major applications of the day.
Nokia is already very strong in the hardware section. Its smartphones like Nokia N8 and N9 have been applauded by critics and users alike. It was only in the operating system category that it was lagging behind, especially in comparison with Google’s Android.
With this new deal, both giants would be able to push their market share to new heights. But at the moment it is evident that Microsoft has got the best of the deal. The collaboration would not only bring in the existing Nokia fan base but would also push Microsoft to come up with better applications.
