Apple has officially announced the AirPods 5 at its “Surprise and Shine” event in Cupertino, California. The new wireless earbuds keep the open-fit design of earlier AirPods while adding active noise cancellation, improved audio, longer battery life and new AI-powered features.

The AirPods 5 are designed for users who prefer an open fit and do not want the silicone ear tips used by the AirPods Pro. Apple says the new earbuds offer the best active noise cancellation available in an open-fit earbud design.

The biggest change is the price. The standard AirPods 5 with ANC start at $129. That is the same price as the AirPods 4 without ANC, giving the new model a significant upgrade without increasing the entry price.

Apple is also offering the AirPods 5 with a Wireless Charging Case for $149. This version adds wireless charging and a force sensor with swipe-based volume control. Apple says the volume swipe feature is a first for its open-ear design.

The more expensive model also offers better battery life. The standard AirPods 5 are rated for around four hours of listening with ANC enabled, while the AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case can last around five hours.

Apple has also upgraded the acoustic system. The AirPods 5 feature a new multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ. The company says these changes deliver richer and more detailed sound while accommodating a wider range of ear shapes.

The new AirPods also bring features such as Live Translation and AI-powered Siri to a more affordable model. These features add more functionality beyond basic music playback and calls.

The AirPods 5 start at $129, while the AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case cost $149. Both are cheaper than the AirPods Pro lineup.
