PUBG MOBILE is getting a new lighter version that could make the popular battle royale game accessible to a much larger number of players. The developers have announced PUBG MOBILE LIGHT, a new app designed to offer a lighter way to play the original PUBG MOBILE experience.
The new app was announced during the PUBG MOBILE World Cup 2026. PUBG MOBILE producer Rick Li revealed the project and confirmed that pre-registration will begin on August 25, 2026. The game is scheduled to launch later this year, although an exact release date has not been announced yet.
The announcement is important because PUBG MOBILE has become a fairly large game over the years. Regular updates have added new maps, modes, graphics, features and other content. While this has made the game more feature-rich, it has also increased the storage and hardware requirements.
PUBG MOBILE LIGHT appears to be the answer to that problem. It will provide a lighter way to enter the PUBG MOBILE experience without requiring players to install the full-sized game.
The new app will be its smaller initial download size. Reports based on the information shared by the developers suggest that the Android version will require around 1GB initially, while the iOS version will be under 2GB.
The game is also expected to use a more flexible download system, which will allow players to get additional content when needed instead of downloading everything at once.
This could make a noticeable difference for users with phones that have limited free storage. It could also help players who do not want a large battle royale game taking up several gigabytes of their phone’s storage.
The important thing is that PUBG MOBILE LIGHT is not being presented simply as an old or stripped-down version of PUBG MOBILE. The developers describe it as a lighter way to access the original battle royale experience.
The word “LIGHT” may make it sound like the game is only meant for budget smartphones, but that may not be the case. Storage is a problem even on more expensive phones. Modern mobile games can take up a significant amount of space after players download updates and optional content. A smaller PUBG MOBILE app could therefore appeal to users who have capable hardware but do not want to dedicate a large amount of storage to one game.
It could also make the game easier to install and update for users with slower internet connections.
So, this new approach could help bring back or attract players who stopped playing because of the game’s increasing size and hardware demands.
Another interesting part of the announcement is that PUBG MOBILE LIGHT is expected to retain the core PUBG MOBILE experience rather than becoming an entirely separate game.
Reports indicate that players will be able to use their existing PUBG MOBILE accounts and access their existing content. Cross-play with players using the regular PUBG MOBILE app has also been reported.
If these features remain in the final release, they could make PUBG MOBILE LIGHT much more useful than the older PUBG MOBILE LITE.
The original PUBG MOBILE LITE was a separate experience designed specifically for lower-end devices. It had its own gameplay limitations and did not allow players to play with users of the main PUBG MOBILE app.
The new LIGHT version appears to be taking a different approach by keeping players closer to the main PUBG MOBILE ecosystem.
The PUBG MOBILE LIGHT announcement is interesting for Indian gamers because KRAFTON India has separately confirmed BGMI Lite for the country. KRAFTON India announced that Battlegrounds Mobile India Lite will launch in India by the end of 2026. The company says the new version is intended to make the BGMI experience accessible to a wider range of players across India.
However, there is an important difference between the two announcements.
PUBG MOBILE LIGHT is the global version, while BGMI Lite is being developed for the Indian market. KRAFTON India has not yet confirmed whether BGMI Lite will have the same download size, features, account support or technical specifications as PUBG MOBILE LIGHT.
KRAFTON India has also not announced a pre-registration date for BGMI Lite yet. So players should not assume that the August 25 pre-registration date announced for PUBG MOBILE LIGHT also applies to BGMI Lite.
This makes PUBG MOBILE LIGHT an interesting preview of what KRAFTON’s lightweight mobile strategy could look like, but we will have to wait for more information before assuming that both versions will be identical.
