GTA 6 Makes Your Character’s Weight Part of the Gameplay

Grand Theft Auto VI is bringing back one of the more interesting features from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, but Rockstar is giving it a much more detailed treatment. Jason and Lucia will not have completely fixed body types. What they eat and how they spend their time can affect how they look in the game.

Rockstar has confirmed that food affects the characters’ weight, while exercise can build and tone their muscles. The Extended Look also shows Lucia working out at a gym, giving us a clear look at how the system fits into the world rather than treating it as a simple character customization option.

This is different from simply choosing a body type during character creation. GTA 6 appears to track the lifestyle of its protagonists and reflect it through their appearance. Eating more can make Jason or Lucia gain weight, while regular exercise can make them more muscular. Going without sleep for long periods can also leave them visibly exhausted.

The system should make the characters feel less static as the story progresses. A player who spends most of their time completing missions and eating without exercising could end up with a different-looking Jason or Lucia from someone who regularly visits the gym and pays more attention to their characters’ routines.

Rockstar has used a similar idea before. In San Andreas, CJ could gain fat by eating too much and build muscle through exercise. The difference is that GTA 6 is bringing the idea back with a much more detailed character system and applying it to both playable protagonists.

The gym itself is also presented as an optional part of life in Leonida. The Extended Look shows Lucia lifting weights, while other footage and previews show additional physical activities. This makes exercise feel like something players can choose to incorporate into their playthrough rather than another mandatory mission mechanic.

What remains unclear is how deeply these physical changes affect gameplay. Rockstar has confirmed the visible effects of eating and exercising, but it has not provided detailed numbers explaining exactly how much weight can be gained or lost, how quickly muscle develops, or whether every physical change produces a measurable gameplay advantage.

Understanding this is important. It would be easy to call GTA 6’s system an RPG-style stat system, but Rockstar has not confirmed all of the mechanics behind it. For now, what we know is that the way players treat Jason and Lucia can visibly change their bodies.

It is a small feature compared with GTA 6’s enormous world, but it says a lot about Rockstar’s approach to the sequel. The studio is making the protagonists feel like characters who actually live in Leonida, rather than models that remain unchanged from the beginning of the game to the end.
