Google Introduces Fake Call Detection to Help Android Users Avoid Scams

Fake Call Detection

Google has announced a new security feature for Android that aims to protect users from one of the most common phone scams. As part of the June Android Drop, the company is introducing Fake Call Detection, a tool that can identify when scammers try to impersonate someone from your contacts list.

Phone scams have become increasingly sophisticated over the past few years. Fraudsters often use caller ID spoofing to make it appear as though they are calling from a trusted friend, family member, or colleague. Many people answer these calls because they recognize the number on the screen, only to discover later that it was a scam.

Google’s new feature is designed to address exactly that problem.

When a call comes in from a saved contact, the Phone by Google app will verify whether the call is actually coming from that contact’s device. If Android detects that someone may be pretending to be one of your contacts, it will display a warning so you can decide whether to continue the conversation or end the call immediately.

The feature could be useful at a time when impersonation scams are becoming more common. Cybercriminals frequently pose as family members, bank representatives, employers, or government officials to trick people into sharing personal information or sending money.

Google says Fake Call Detection will be available on devices running Android 12 and newer through the Phone by Google app.
