Bethesda has finally confirmed that Fallout 76 will receive native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions this summer. The upgrade was originally planned for release in early 2026, but the company delayed it to give developers more time to polish the experience.
Before the official launch, Bethesda will hold an open testing period throughout June. Anyone who already owns Fallout 76 will be able to download and try the PS5 and Xbox Series test versions.
The new versions bring several improvements designed to take advantage of modern console hardware. Bethesda says players can expect a targeted 60 frames per second experience across Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 5 Pro. The update also improves draw distances and shadow quality, making the world look sharper and more detailed.
Players with compatible displays will be able to enjoy 4K resolution on Xbox Series X, Xbox One X, and PlayStation 5 Pro. Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support is also being added for Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 5 Pro, which should help deliver smoother gameplay.
On the PlayStation side, both PS5 and PS4 Pro will support 1440p output, while previous-generation consoles will continue to run at 1080p.
The announcement comes as Fallout 76 continues to enjoy renewed popularity. The game had a difficult launch back in 2018 and received criticism for technical issues and a lack of content. However, years of updates have significantly improved the experience. Bethesda has added new quests, storylines, events, and quality-of-life improvements that helped rebuild the game’s reputation among players.
The latest Fallout 76 update, called “Infestations,” is already available and introduces fresh content for players exploring post-apocalyptic Appalachia.
For existing players, the upcoming PS5 and Xbox Series versions should offer the smoothest and best-looking way to experience the game on consoles. The June testing period will also give Bethesda a chance to gather feedback before the full launch later this summer.
Fallout 76 is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store.
