Counter-Strike Nexon is officially shutting down at the end of September 2026. The developers shared the announcement on Steam and thanked players for supporting the game since its release. This marks the end of a long 12-year journey for the game.
Counter-Strike Nexon was launched on October 7, 2014. It was a free-to-play spin on the classic Counter-Strike formula, developed with Nexon. The game kept the core team-based shooting gameplay but added a very different direction with zombie modes, fantasy weapons, and arcade-style mechanics.
When it first came out, the reaction from gamers was mixed. Many Counter-Strike fans were not fully convinced because it was very different from the competitive focus of Counter-Strike 1.6 or CS: GO. The heavy focus on zombies, missions, and upgraded weapons made it feel less serious for competitive players. At the same time, casual players enjoyed it because it was free, easy to access, and offered a more relaxed experience with variety in gameplay modes.

For a while, it managed to build a small but dedicated community. Players who enjoyed co-op zombie fights and experimental game modes stayed active, while competitive players mostly stayed away.
The situation started changing when CS: GO went free-to-play in 2018. This was a major turning point. CS: GO already had a strong global player base, ranked matchmaking, and a serious esports scene. Once it became free, it removed one of the biggest advantages Nexon had, which was accessibility. Many new and returning players naturally moved toward CS: GO instead of a modified spin-off.
Over time, Counter-Strike Nexon slowly lost relevance. The player base became smaller, updates became less impactful, and attention shifted even more toward CS: GO and later Counter-Strike 2. The game’s identity also stayed limited. It was neither a full competitive shooter nor a long-term PvE-focused live service game, which made it harder to retain players in the long run.
DLC purchases will stop from June 24, and the game will fully shut down three months later.
Counter-Strike Nexon had a good idea but a difficult position. It worked best as a casual spin-off, but the Counter-Strike brand eventually moved fully toward a single competitive platform. In that situation, parallel versions like Nexon’s naturally lose relevance over time.
