Amazon Prime Members in India Will Soon Hear Ads on Amazon Music Unless They Pay Extra

Amazon Music

Amazon has announced a major change for Amazon Music users in India. Starting July 2, Amazon Prime members will no longer get ad-free music streaming as part of their subscription.

The company has introduced a new Amazon Music Unlimited plan that offers ad-free music, offline downloads, HD and Ultra HD audio, Spatial Audio, and Dolby Atmos support. Prime members who want these features will now have to pay an additional Rs. 99 per month, while non-Prime users can subscribe for Rs. 199 per month.

Until now, Amazon Prime members could access Amazon Music without ads and enjoy features such as offline downloads and higher-quality audio at no extra cost. That is about to change.

Beginning next month, Prime subscribers will continue to have access to Amazon Music’s catalogue of more than 100 million songs and podcasts, but the service will include what Amazon calls “limited ads”. They will also lose access to HD and Ultra HD streaming, Spatial Audio, Dolby Atmos, and offline downloads unless they upgrade to the Unlimited plan.

The move follows a strategy Amazon has already adopted with Prime Video. Last year, the company started showing ads on Prime Video and introduced a separate add-on for users who wanted an ad-free experience.

Amazon is also preparing to launch a new Amazon Music Free tier in India. The upcoming plan will provide free access to the platform’s music catalogue with advertisements, similar to Spotify’s free subscription tier.

The latest changes effectively create three different Amazon Music experiences in India. Free users will get ad-supported access without a subscription. Prime members will continue to get access through their existing membership, but with limited ads and fewer premium features. Users who want the full experience will need to subscribe to Amazon Music Unlimited.

TierWhat you getPrice

The decision could disappoint some Prime subscribers who have enjoyed ad-free music as part of their membership for years. At the same time, it brings Amazon Music closer to the business model used by Spotify, YouTube Music, and other streaming services that reserve premium features for paying subscribers.

The new Amazon Music Unlimited plan is available immediately, while the changes for existing Prime members will take effect on July 2.
