Xbox Delays Fable to February 2027, Likely Giving It Space Away From GTA 6

Fable

Xbox has officially delayed Fable to February 2027. The announcement comes just days before the Xbox Games Showcase, which will be held on June 7 as part of Summer Game Fest 2026.

The upcoming RPG reboot is being developed by Playground Games, the studio best known for the Forza Horizon series. While Xbox says the delay will give the team more time to polish the game, the move also appears to be a strategic decision to avoid a crowded release calendar that includes Grand Theft Auto VI.

In a statement shared on social media, Xbox pointed to the large number of major games arriving later this year. The company highlighted its own lineup, including Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. It also mentioned upcoming third-party titles such as Control Resonant, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and Grand Theft Auto VI.

According to Xbox, moving Fable to February 2027 will allow the game to have “the dedicated moment it deserves.”

The company also confirmed that fans will get a major new look at the game during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7.

Playground Games also responded to the news with a light-hearted message. The studio acknowledged that the delay may disappoint fans but assured players that it would not be much longer before they return to Albion and start making “morally questionable decisions” again.

While delays are never welcome news for players, this one is not particularly surprising.

The second half of 2026 is going to be one of the busiest periods the gaming industry has seen in years. Every publisher is trying to find the right release window, and GTA 6 remains the biggest challenge. Rockstar’s upcoming title is expected to dominate gaming discussions, media coverage, streaming platforms, and player attention for months after launch.

Few publishers would willingly launch a major game close to GTA 6.

Even highly anticipated games can struggle for visibility when released alongside a cultural phenomenon. Moving Fable into early 2027 gives Xbox a chance to market the game more effectively and potentially avoid competing for players’ time and money during the crowded holiday season.

There is also a business reason behind the decision. Modern AAA games often cost hundreds of millions of dollars to develop and market. With budgets continuing to rise, publishers cannot afford to see major releases get overshadowed by a larger launch.

The extra development time could also benefit the game itself. Expectations for Fable are extremely high because it marks the return of one of Xbox’s most beloved RPG franchises. Fans have been waiting years to see how Playground Games adapts the series while maintaining the humor, charm, and player choice that made the original games popular.

Xbox now has an opportunity to use the June 7 showcase to rebuild excitement around the project and show how far development has progressed.

For now, Fable is scheduled to launch in February 2027.
