Subnautica 2 Crosses 2 Million Sales in Just 12 Hours After Early Access Launch

Subnautica 2

Subnautica 2 has made a massive debut in Early Access. Developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment confirmed that the game sold more than two million copies within just 12 hours of launch. Even more impressive, the game crossed one million sales in the very first hour.

Subnautica 2 launched in Early Access on May 14 for Xbox Series X and Series S and PC through Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store. The game is also available through Xbox Game Pass, making its early success even more notable.

The game continues to dominate Steam charts and currently holds the number one spot on Steam’s global top sellers list across several countries.

Player numbers are also extremely strong. According to the latest Steam charts data, Subnautica 2 currently has more than 160,000 active players, while its 24-hour peak crossed 213,000 players. The game’s all-time peak player count has already reached 467,582 players on Steam alone since launch.

Across Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox platforms combined, the game reportedly crossed 651,000 concurrent players. Steam itself peaked at more than 467,000 concurrent players. That is around nine times higher than the peak player count of the original Subnautica when it launched back in 2018.

The game is also performing extremely well on streaming platforms. On Twitch, Subnautica 2 reached over 413,000 peak concurrent viewers during launch, becoming the most-watched category on the platform at the time. Current Twitch viewership still remains strong with over 31,000 active viewers and more than 2,200 live channels streaming the game.

Meanwhile, YouTube Live reportedly crossed 109,000 peak concurrent viewers in the gaming category.

The huge success shows how much demand existed for a proper sequel to the Subnautica franchise. The original game built a massive fanbase thanks to its unique underwater survival gameplay, exploration, crafting mechanics, and atmospheric alien world.

Subnautica 2 takes things further with a completely new alien planet, upgraded visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5, and larger environments. One of the biggest new additions is optional four-player co-op support, something fans had requested for years.

The strong launch also suggests that survival and sandbox games continue to remain extremely popular on PC. Many recent live-service games have struggled to maintain player interest, but Subnautica 2 seems to have found success by focusing on exploration, survival, and cooperative gameplay instead of competitive mechanics.

There is also speculation that the game could grow even bigger over the next few months. Since this is only the Early Access version, more content, creatures, story updates, and gameplay features are expected before the full release. If Unknown Worlds continues to support the game properly, Subnautica 2 could easily become one of the biggest PC game launches of 2026.
