A few days back, 4A Games announced Metro 2039 and promised more details Xbox showcase. Today, during the Xbox showcase, the company gave us official details, a trailer, and a first look at gameplay. The game is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC.
Metro 2039 continues the series’ focus on story-driven gameplay. It is a single-player first-person shooter with a strong emphasis on atmosphere and psychological horror. The reveal included a 15-minute showcase with developers sharing insights and a short gameplay teaser.
The footage shows the familiar Metro setting with dark tunnels, mutant encounters, and survival-focused gameplay. Weapons, gadgets, and the signature wristwatch system are returning.
The story is set in the year 2039. Survivors of nuclear war are still living inside the Metro tunnels under Moscow. This time, the underground factions are united under a new regime called Novoreich.
The leader, known as the Fuhrer, promises a better future on the surface. But the reality is different. People are still trapped underground and controlled through propaganda.
Players will take on the role of a new character called The Stranger. He is a haunted survivor who is forced to return to the Metro. Unlike previous games, this protagonist will be fully voiced, which should improve storytelling and immersion.
The developers have also confirmed that the game’s narrative is influenced by real-world events. 4A Games, which has strong Ukrainian roots, said the ongoing situation in Ukraine has shaped the story. The game will focus more on choices, consequences, and survival.
The core Metro experience remains the same. Players can expect a mix of stealth, combat, exploration, and a heavy atmosphere.
The first gameplay teaser already shows improved visuals and more detailed environments. The game is being built for current-generation hardware, so expectations are high.
Metro 2039 will be available on Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store for PC, along with consoles.
