After 5 Years, TikTok’s Website Goes Live Again in India – Is the App Next?

TikTok’s Website Goes Live Again in India

TikTok has quietly made a partial return to India. After being banned for five years, the short-video platform’s website is now accessible in the country. However, the app remains blocked on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

In June 2020, India banned TikTok along with 58 other Chinese apps. The ban came after the Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops. The government cited national security and data privacy concerns as the reason for the move.

This development comes amid improving India–China diplomatic ties. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited New Delhi and met Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar. They stressed a “candid and constructive approach” to relations.

India and China have also agreed to reopen border trade at three Himalayan passes—Lipulekh, Shipki La, and Nathu La. They are working to resume direct flights, streamline visas, and boost people-to-people contact.

Some experts think these diplomatic moves may be creating an environment where apps like TikTok could return. It’s too early to say for sure.

There’s no official confirmation from TikTok’s parent company ByteDance or the Indian government. The ban remains in place, and the app is still blocked. For now, it is mere speculation.
