Corning introduces Gorilla Glass 7i for mid-range and budget smartphones

Gorilla Glass 7i

Corning has introduced a new tough glass for mid-range and budget smartphones. The company calls it Corning Gorilla Glass 7i. This glass boasts to be stronger against drops and scratches compared to competing glasses.

Corning claims that Gorilla Glass 7i can survive falls of up to one meter on touch surfaces like asphalt. Competing glasses might break at half that height. Gorilla Glass 7i is twice as resistant to scratches as competing glasses.

The company decided to launch a new product, especially for mid-range and budget smartphones after seeing the brands using old Gorilla Glass in their latest phones. For example, Nothing Phone (2a) and Poco F6 Pro feature Gorilla Glass 5 which was released back in 2016. Pixel 8a uses Gorilla Glass 3 which was released in 2013. So, Corning saw an opportunity to release a modern solution for budget smartphones.

Although the company promotes Gorilla Glass 7i as a glass protection for smartphones, it can also be used on other devices such as smartwatches.

Oppo will be the company to use Gorilla Glass 7i in its smartphone.
