Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 review

Redmi Note 4

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 was quite successful in India and now Redmi Note 4 is available on the market to offer a better budget phone in the same price segment. The phone is already on sale in India but before you buy, I recommend you to read the review to know more about the phone. Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is available in three different RAM/Storage variants. I am writing about the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 3GB RAM and 32 GB storage

Price of different variants

2GB RAM/ 16GB internal storage : Rs 9,999,
3GB RAM/ 32GB internal storage : Rs 10,999
4GB RAM/ 64GB internal storage : Rs 12,999

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 review

Design

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 comes with almost similar design as its predecessor but with few changes. Now the phone has all-metal chassis and is heavier this time. The phone feels great to hold and use. The overall finish feels like a premium phone.

The front is flat with the 2.5D curved glass finish and the back has curving edges similar to Mi 5.

It has capacitive keys below the display which are very responsive and easy to use. The right side has the volume rocker and power button. The left side has the hybrid SIM slot.

On the top edge, it has headphone hack and IR blaster. It has the micro USB port and single speaker unit at below side.

The backpanel has 13 MP rear camera, dual LED flash and fingerprint sensor at top-center of backpanel. Antenna bands are shiney to contribute in the looks.

It will be available in three color Dark Grey, Gold and a super sleek matte black. I recommend the matte black but it will be available later this month.

Display

The phone has the 5.5-inch display with 2.5D curved glass. The display offers improved color calibration. It is sharp and colors look great. The display has good viewing angles and offers decent outdoor legibility.

Redmi Note 4’s display also offers Reading mode, that is a blue light filter to make it easier tor read at night. You also have the option to adjust the color temperature, and toggle double tap to wake the screen.

Xiaomi doesn’t claim if there is any protective glass has been used, so I recommend the use of a good screen guard.

Software

MIUI 8 is the Xiaomi’s biggest release that brought lots of features. The phone’s MIUI is based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow but the Nougat update will be available soon.

MIUI also offers dual apps that let you run two instances of the same apps. So, you can run two WhatsApp or Facebook accounts on the same phone. You also have the option for second space that lets you set up two profiles on the phone with different home screen and apps. You can easily move data between profiles.

You get Many themes, wallpapers, and ringtones to use in the phone and customize it as per your interest. There is also a Lite Mode in the MIUI to use only basic features of the phone.

Performance and Storage

In India, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 comes with Snapdragon 625 built on the 14nm node. This chipset offers energy efficiency. This phone comes in 2GB, 3GB, and 4GB RAM models. Choose depending on your budget and need. The more RAM the phone gets, the better multi-tasking it offers.

The 2 GHz octa-core processor performance decent and offers smooth performance most of the times. The memory management is also impressive. For handling graphics, this phone has Adreno 506 GPU.

Benchmarking scores are not as good as in Redmi Note 3. See the benchmarking scores on Antutu and Geekbench below.

The gaming experience on the phone is pretty impressive and high-end games like Asphalt 8, NFS and Real Racing 3 were great. It becomes warm after playing games for a long time but didn’t struggle in terms of performance.

The phone comes in 16/32/64GB of internal storage which is further expandable up to 128GB.

Redmi Note 4 Review

Camera

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 comes with 13 megapixels rear camera with f/2.0 lens and PDAF. It also has 5 megapixels front camera with f/2.0 aperture. The camera app is smooth and easy to use. It comes with various modes and option. It also has a restricted manual mode.

The camera dos a great job by taking excellent photos in most of the conditions. It captures full details and saturated colors. I already wrote a separate camera review. You can read that camera review of Redmi Note 4 and see the camera samples.

Fingerprint and IR Blaster

The phone has the fingerprint scanner on the back panel. This fingerprint scanner works fine and unlocks the phone quickly. It also has IR blaster that lets you control a variety of appliances.

Multimedia and connectivity

It offers decent multimedia experience with loud and clear sound, but the sound distorts at high volume. Due to better placement, the speaker at the bottom is better than its predecessor. The display is also bright and offers good viewing experience. In-call sound is also clear.

The phone offers 4G with VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, micro USB and GPS connectivity options. It is a dual SIM phone with hybrid slots.

Battery life

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 comes with 4100 mAh battery that offers better battery performance. Battery life has received a boost thanks to the Snapdragon 625 SoC. The phone easily offers around 30 hours of usage with the full charge. One can easily get more than 6 hours of screen-on-time with moderate usage.

This phone comes with fast charging with 5V/2A charger that is equivalent to Quick Charge 2.0 speeds. It takes around two hours to fully charge.

Final Words

With Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Xiaomi didn’t try to re-invent anything but to fix existing flaws and make the same device better in terms of performance. This is the reason, Redmi Note 4 does not look like an upgrade over Redmi Note 3 if you just see specifications on the paper. If you consider the performance, this phone impresses.

In this price, now we also have dual camera phones including Cool 1 and Honor 6X but Redmi Note 4 still makes it way to the recommended phone’s list. With its awesome performance, decent camera and amazing battery life, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is an awesome device to own.

The only issue with Xiaomi phones is the availability. People in our country are still struggling to get Redmi 3S and Redmi 3S Prime, I am not sure if you will be able to get the Redmi Note 4 during sales.
