Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro

A few days back, I reviewed Zenfone 4 Selfie smartphone that comes in the budget segment. After that, I started testing the high-end model Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro with the dual front camera. The phone aims selfie-loving people and offers several camera-centric features including portrait mode. I have been using this phone for over 10 days and here is the review of Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro.

Design

The phone is premium with sleek design and pleasant feeling. It has a metallic body and the phone is very light as well as it weighs 147 grams.

It has a dual front camera set up above the 5.5-inch display. It has a physical home button below the display along with two capacitive backlit on either side. This physical button also has a fingerprint sensor to unlock this phone.

The volume rocker and power button sit at right side edge. Hybrid SIM card slot is on the left. The top side has just a secondary microphone for noise cancellation. The base side has 3.5 mm headphone jack, micro USB port, and speaker.

The rear panel has a rear camera with dual LED flash and Asus branding. Anttena band lines at the top and bottom side of back panel also contribute to its look.

In my opinion, the design of this phone is pretty impressive. It could be slippery, so you need to buy a good case for extra protection.

Display

The phone has 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED display with 2.5D curved Glass. The display also has Gorilla Glass protection and Smudge-resistant oleophobic coating. The display is pretty impressive offering nice color reproduction and good colors. The display offers amazing video and gaming experience. It is not very bright, so outdoor experience is not as good as I was expecting.

Zen UI also offers you to tweak the display from settings to get the desired results. You also get a Blue light filter for night reading.

Software and UI

The phone runs on Zen UI based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. The Zen UI offers heavy customization over Android and comes with pre-installed apps as well. The good thing is that Asus has reduced bloatware this time and made the skin lighter than before.

The UI comes with several tools to improve the experience and social media apps we generally use. While browsing the web, you will see a floating bookmark icon that lets you save the web page for offline reading in one tap.

Swiping from top to bottom opens quick settings panel. You can customize it to arrange icons depending on your usage. You can also add or remove icons. As always, you have the option to enjoy lots of themes, wallpapers, and animation.

Asus has added ZenUI safeguard option in settings. It is basically SOS feature to help you in case of emergency.

You also have the option to create a copy of social media apps if you want multiple accounts in a phone. You can create a copy of Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp like apps.

The UI is smooth and offers lag-free experience. I am impressed to see the improvements in Zen UI. Previously, it used to be a negative point for Asus phones.

Performance

Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro comes with Snapdragon 625 with Adreno 506 GPU and 4GB of RAM. We have already seen the power and efficiency of this chipset. The same kind of experience is with this phone. The phone is smooth in performance and is capable of handling heavy tasks and games. It also handles multimedia playback and multitasking well.

The phone is also very good for gamers. You can play lots of low-end and high-end games without any issue. Even long gaming session doesn’t show any heating.

This model comes with 64GB of storage and you can also expand the storage. In case you are interested in benchmark scores, see the screenshots below.

The fingerprint sensor of this phone also works fine and accuracy is good. Other than unlocking the phone, it can also be used to receive calls.

The phone has bottom firing speakers that produce a loud sound. It’s ‘Hi-Res Audio’ certified to support 192kHz/24-bit audio files.  You also get earphones within the box. It is good enough to enjoy music.

Camera

The name of this phone itself says the purpose of this phone. It is mainly for selfie camera and rear camera of this phone is also good. The phone as a dual front camera with 12 MP Sony IMX362 sensor having f/1.8 aperture and 5 megapixels Omnivision sensor offering a 120-degree field of view. Asus has also packed this phone with DuoPixel technology that extrapolates the 12MP images to 24MP size to give you more details. As the phone is all about selfies, I tested the front camera a lot.

The DuoPixel sounds better on paper, but I was not much impressed as it takes time in processing and you need to stand extra for it to complete. It also doesn’t add much value and normal shots are itself good enough to ignore this DuoPixel.

You can also capture, wide-angle shots that comes with light fisheye effect. But its low-resolution is visible if you compare the shots captured by the main front camera.

You also have the option to capture portrait shots but don’t expect shots similar what we get in a flagship phone. The portrait on Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro works fine only if there is good light around and the blur effect is good enough to have a good portrait. The rear camera also has the option to capture portrait and it works fine.

The phone also got a 16 megapixels rear camera. It does a good job in daylight and captures detailed shots. Auto HDR works well most of the times and manages to shot good images. The color reproduction is also accurate. The indoor shots are also good.

The front camera can also record 4K videos. If you are into Vblogging, you will surely love the quality this front camera can record. The rear camera can also record 4K videos. The EIS does a pretty good job but you could miss OIS. The very limited dynamic range is another smaller issues in videos.

Connectivity and Battery

The phone supports 4G with VoLTE. Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and micro USB. I used this with Vodafone and Jio network and never faced any issue with network or connectivity.

The phone has 3000 mAh battery that looks smaller if you compare the phone with other competitors. But with Snapdragon 625, a battery efficient chipset, this battery easily offers a full day usage. Still, it could be better and a heavy user wouldn’t be satisfied.  You get a 10W charger in the box to charge this phone. The phone takes over two hours to fully charge the phone.

Final Words

Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie 4 is an awesome phone that not just looks good, but also offers nice performance. The camera of this phone is not as good but as Asus claims, but it is certainly a strong point of this phone. The phone targets selfie-crazy people who need a good phone with a nice camera, this phone is certainly for you.

The phone directly competes with another selfie phone Vivo V7 Plus and managed to beat that easily. But I still feel that the price is bit high and it could be Rs. 20000 to make it more attractive.
