Nokia 2 First Impressions: A Budget Phone with Big Battery and Google Assistant

nokia 2

Today, HMD Global launched a budget Nokia phone in Indian market. This new phone aims first-time smartphone buyers. This budget phone is Nokia 2 with basic hardware specifications and latest software.

Today, the company did global launch and chose India because it is the potential market for budget phones. The company priced this phone at EUR 99 and it will be available in Mid-November. I was at the global launch and used this phone for some time. Here is my first impressions of Nokia 2.

Nokia 2 comes with a 5-inch display and thick bezels around it. It has Nokia branding at the top along with the front camera. It lacks any capacitive navigation key and uses on-screen navigation keys.

It has removable back cover to install SIM cards and microSD card. It has volume rockers and power button at the right. The top side has a headphone jack and base side has a micro USB port. The back panel has vertical setup for rear camera and flash. Speaker is located at the bottom right side of back panel.

The phone uses a series 6000 Aluminum build. The build quality of the phone is good. It comes with different color options.

The phone has 5-inch LTPS display panel that saves battery juice. It also has Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

The phone packs Snapdragon 212 with Adreno 304 GPU and 1 GB RAM. This is the most basic setup for a smartphone. So the phone just offers a basic level of usage. You should not expect gaming performance. It also lags sometimes and heavy apps should also be slow. But this chipset brings 4G VoLTE option.

The phone has 8 GB storage with the option to expand storage up to 128GB. I was not impressed with the storage amount. It should be at least 16 GB.

The phone comes with Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box and will soon get Android 8.0 Oreo update. Nokia will also provide regular Android security patches and updates. This is also the first budget phone offering Google Assistant.

The phone has 8 megapixels rear camera and 5 megapixels front camera. Both cameras are pretty basic and you should not expect too much from the camera.

The phone has 4100 mAh battery that claims to offer 2 days of battery usage. Considering the hardware specifications, this phone is capable of offering as per claims if you do not use it too much.

Final Words

Nokia 2 is a basic smartphone with nothing exciting to offer. Google Assistant and long battery life are two notable things. Now the pricing will decide if this phone could become successful. If this phone comes for the price less than Rs. 6000, then I can think of recommending this but not if priced higher.
