Google Tango

Google Tango is an augmented reality computing platform that includes set of sensors and computer vision software from Google. This platform enables smartphones to detect their position relative to the world around them.

With this project, Google wants mobile phones to see the world in a way we see it. It means, the phone can understand the environment and its relation with it. It can measure its position in a relative manner to provide augmented reality experiences.

Google’s Project Tango uses three core things: Motion tracking, depth perception, and Area Learning.

Google Tango

First, it uses motion tracking to understand its position and orientation. Ur users few sensors including accelerometer and gyroscope in this processor. Then it examines the shape of the world around it for depth perception. In the last step, it uses area leaning that maps out and remembers the area around it.

“See virtual objects on top of the real world”

One of the most fun application of Tango in the gaming. With augmented reality apps, we can play games in the real-world. It can also be helpful in mapping a house and lot more things. It can also improve the online shopping experience. You can actually see how furniture will look in your house before buying it. The same kind of thing can be for fashion shopping.

Tango also provides a consistent technology for developers. So developers can work on augmented reality apps for different devices. Augmented reality is still in the early phase and the possibilities we see are just beginning to be explored.

As of now, there are two Tango-enabled devices in the market. Lenovo Phab 2 Pro was the first Google Tango phone and it was launched in India early this year in January. The second phone is Asus Zenfone AR and it is coming to India very soon.
