Moto G5 Plus First Impressions

Moto G5 Plus is the first Moto G series that sports a metal unibody design. It was a much needed step because all other companies have already adopted the metal design and people are liking it. The phone has 7.7-mm thickness and weight is just 155 grams.

The front panel of the phone has 5.2-inch display protected with Gorilla Glass 3. The phone has on-screen navigation keys and it has a fingerprint sensor located below the display. At the right edge, it has volume rockers. 3.5mm audio jack and microUSB is located at below side. It has SIM card and microSD card slot try at the top edge. You can install two SIM cards and a microSD card at the same time in the phone.

The back side has the rear camera with a large camera bezels. The phone got splashproof design and you can use it with wet hands and even the phone will be fine if exposed in rain or if you accidentally drop it in water.

The design is solid but I didn’t find it much attractive. And this is the only thing that didn’t impress me.

The phone has 5.2-inch Full HD display. The company has reduced the size of the display this year, so it is a letdown for those who need larger display. But this size makes perfect sense for most of the people as it makes it easier to use the phone. The display offers nice color reproduction and good viewing angles.

The phone is powered by a 2.0 GHz Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor coupled with Adreno 506 GPU. This chipset is known to offer nice performance and improved battery life. With 3GB or 4GB RAM, you will surely get good performance on the phone.

The phone comes with 16GB or 32GB storage options. It supports USB OTG and the best thing is that you can install a microSD card to expand storage up to 128GB. It has dedicated slot for this and you will not have to compromise with any of the SIM slot for using it.

The phone has 12 megapixels rear camera with f/1.7 aperture, 1.4-micron pixels, dual AF pixels and LED flash. The camera of the phone offers nice photo experience. It can also record up to 4K videos. It also offers good low-light photo experience.

At front side, the phone has 5-megapixels camera for capturing selfies. This camera is also good.

The phone comes with Android 7.0 Nougat with Moto Pure experience. You also get Google Assistant but you need to activate if. It also comes with Moto specific gestures including double twist to open the camera, chop-chop to turn on flash light. Initial impressions with the software is fine, but it needs thorough testing before I make any claims about it. Moto G4 didn’t impress with its software performance.

The phone supports 4G with VoLTE. Other connectivity features of the phone are Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, MicroUSB and GPS. It is packed with 3000mAh battery with Turbo charging feature. It can give up to six hours of battery life in just 15 minutes of charge. With Snapdragon 625 chipset, this phone will also offer improved performance.

Overall the phone is a good deal due to its nice offerings. Moto G series is quite successful in India. So, we expect good response from consumers. It will face tough competition from Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and Honor 6X in the market. Here, Redmi Note 4 is quite similar but offers larger battery but Honor 6X offers dual camera. So, it will be interesting to see the response from consumers for the phone.
