New version of Bluetooth promises better range and more speed

According to an announcement made by the Special Interests Group (SIG) the next iteration of Bluetooth, Bluetooth 5 is going to have four times the range and twice the speed of its predecessor. This iteration will also feature the support for the broadcast of increased messaging capacity leading to the transmission of richer data and allowing the next generation of wireless services to come into existence.

This new version is expected to be out by 2017 and expected to be targeted towards IoT devices, which have the common notion that everything should be connected in a better, faster way.

“Increasing operation range will enable connections to IoT devices that extend far beyond the walls of a typical home, while increasing speed supports faster data transfers and software updates for devices,” Mark Powell, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG, said in a statement. “And now with the ability to broadcast a much richer set of information, Bluetooth 5 will make beacons, location awareness, and other connectionless services an even more relevant part of an effortless and seamless IoT experience.”

The previous iteration of Bluetooth, the Bluetooth 4.1 was introduced in December 2013.

According to a post by  Press Insider Daily, the technology is also aimed at low powered devices like smartwatches keyboards etc. Another amazing this about this iteration is the fact that they have done away with the pairing system, instead have opted for connectionless data transfer. The importance and use of this feature are manifold.

Firstly, when you search for devices the device itself will take care of the best form of connection to make the transfer of the data seamless. Second, this feature could be best used for location tracking, for example, if you assign a particular beacon to a product in a warehouse, then if you search for it, you will be intimated that the object is nearby.
