ARM unveils next-generation VR-centric CPU and GPU

Mobile Virtual Reality got a boost with ARM’s latest announcement. In the latest introduction to its new architecture, the company introduced a new CPU and GPU that is able to run the device at higher resolutions without having a detrimental effect on the battery life.

The Mali G71 mobile GPU is capable of delivering a 50 percent increase in graphics performance and a 20 percent increase in power efficiency over current chips, whereas, the Cortex A73 processor brings about better core efficiency having up to 30 percent more efficiency than the previous Cortex-A72 while offering about 1.3 times the level of peak performance. This enables the processor to work at twice the speed without compromising on the battery consumption.

The Mali series of GPU is the most used graphics processor, with more than 750 million supported devices getting shipped in 2015.

“In 2017, we will see devices with the Cortex-A73 and Mali-G71 processors that stand out thanks to their impressive and sustained performance, and even more stunning visuals,” said ARM VP Pete Hutton in a statement. “This technology can make engaging with 4K video, virtual reality and augmented reality an everyday experience on a mobile device.”

This does make a whole lot of change as high-performance VR technology is quite expensive and needs an equally expensive high-end processing device. Whereas, on the other hand, the top order devices which are able to support VR are limited to the Samsung GearVR or Google’s Cardboard as they are not popular enough to support high-end graphics.

According to a statement made by the company, the new GPU is comparable to the discrete cards found in laptops like Nvidia’s GTX 940M in terms of performance and is ready to take on all the requirements that are necessary for VR.
