Datawind President and CEO Suneet Singh Tuli

World’s cheapest smartphone Freedom 251 is in the news for wrong reasons. The company behind this phone, Ringing Bells also tried to answer most of the questions asked by media to confirm that their claims are not a scam. Forget about different controversies, the company claims to get more than 60 million bookings for the phone. And this number forced other rivals to think about this company.

CEO of DataWind Suneet Singh Tuli, maker of world’s cheapest tablet, also questioned this Rs. 251 smartphone. He said that this phone will not bring any benefit for the company and will not affect other market players. He also alleged that this offer is just a promotion.

“Every month, about two crore mobile phones are sold in India. The company [Ringing Bells] claims to have 25 lakh bookings and some crore registrations. If the product is actually shipped, the 25 lakh units will neither affect the market nor the prospects of our company,” Datawind President and CEO Suneet Singh Tuli told reporters.

“If you buy 10 lakh units then maximum discount one get is of 5-6 per cent. When memory chip promised in the phone [Freedom 251] costs more than the price being offered then there is no way phone can be made for Rs 251 apiece. It is just a donation,” He added.

He said that 1 GB RAM chip costs $5.5 and there is no way a company can produce a phone at this price. Although, he didn’t use ‘scam’ word for the company but he said that the phone is just a promotional way to get some recognition.

He also added that Datawind is also planning to launch a cheap smartphone for Rs. 1500. This smartphone can come as early as next month. But this phone can also not match the specifications of Freedom 251.
