Google Wants to Spy on Emails with Its new Patent

Google has filed a new patent for a software system that could prevent email users from writing problematic and controversial words or phrases in emails. This sounds scary because Google will have full control on our email and it can read what we are typing.

Google Wants to Spy on Emails with Its new Patent

Google already accepted that it scans emails to find keywords for advertisements targeting  And this patent aims to give more control over out emails.

This new patent is called Policy Violation Checker. With this new technology it can detect problematic word. If it detects the user is writing something that falls under Problematic, it will alert user that he is writing that violates protocol. It also suggests alternate words that user can use in place of that word.

“If a user creates a text document, presentation, or other document with a problematic phrase, the policy violation checker may notify a member of the legal department of the existence of the document,” Google explains in its patent filing.

If users avoid the notification and sends the email with problematic phrase, a member of the legal department may be notified of the e-mail and email sender to take appropriate action.

According to Google, this will be much useful for corporations that want to avoid lawsuits and leaks.

This tool seems to be used in Gmail Apps. So higher authorities of the company may decide the problematic words to have full control over employees communication. If Google applies this in real time, it can create controversies.

We are not sure whether Google has planned to use it in Gmail or not. But this is the topic of discussion because privacy of users is on the risk. If Google applies this in Gmail, government officials can track and control the communication. This will surely create lots of problems if launched in market.

Google spokesman Matt Kallman wrote in an email to Huffingtonpost that even if Google’s patent application is approved, the technology might not make its way to market.
