According to a report, Facebook monitors users chat with the help of a scanning software. If it detects any suspicious activity or behavior in the chat, it notifies to police about these persons with details.

Chat scanning process is done by a scanning software which scans users’ chat for some word or phrases which signal something wrong or vulgar. If both users are new connection, Facebook pay more attention to their chats. Facebook also pays attention to those chats in which there is a wide age gap between users. If the scanning software found something suspicious in chat, it notifies Facebook security team. Security team manually review the chat and decide whether to inform police or not.

It’s good that Facebook is using a scanning tool and keeping out chats from Facebook employees. It will save Facebook from privacy issues. But its hard to say whether scanned chats are being stored or not.

Facebook’s chief security officer, Joe Sullivan also told Reuters about Facebook’s monitoring system. He said, “We’ve never wanted to set up an environment where we have employees looking at private communications, so it’s really important that we use technology that has a very low false-positive rate.”

Facebook has clearly mentioned on the help pages that company works with law enforcement. It has clearly mentioned that it can share users data if there is a need to prevent fraud or crime.

Facebook says, “We may also share information when we have a good faith belief it is necessary to prevent fraud or other illegal activity, to prevent imminent bodily harm, or to protect ourselves and you from people violating our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. This may include sharing information with other companies, lawyers, courts or other government entities.”
