Google Docs gets an update which improves its spell checker. Now it did not use the old dictionary based spellchecker. In dictionary based spellchecker, any words that weren’t found in the dictionary were underlined as spelling errors.
Now Google uses Google search style “Did You Mean” spell checker which was also introduced in Google Chrome. This search tool aims to check the spelling errors on the words that are commonly misused such as “you’re” and “your.” It also notified common grammar errors. It underlines the words in red which shows a pop up “Did You Mean” suggestions.
“The neat thing about that system is that it’s adaptive: our suggestions get smarter and smarter based on the words Googlebot sees as it explores the web,” Yew Jin Lim, a Google Software Engineer, said on the Google Docs blog.
This new system is a huge improvement which will make spell checker smarter. The classical dictionary based spell checker only checks for the spelling mistakes while this new one will also improve some grammatical mistakes.
This new spellchecker is available in English for documents and will be rolled out soon for other languages.
