Encyclopedia Britannica Goes Digital, available Free for a Week

244 years old, Encyclopaedia Britannica will no longer be available in print. This world’s best-known and most-reliable reference encyclopedia will only be available on digital format.

The last 32 volume set is still available in the market which added new entries on global warming and the Human Genome Project. In 2010, it printed a mere 12,000 sets and still has 3,500 left unsold. Each 32-volume set of Encyclopaedia Britannica costs about $1,500.

In this digital age, it is getting a tough competition from the website Wikipedia. So Company will now focus on digital formats. The Chicago publisher said it would instead focus on selling its reference works to subscribers through its website and apps for tablets or smartphones.

“This is not a sad day at Britannica,” said Jorge Cauz, president of Encyclopaedia Britannica. “We are a fully digital company.”

The online edition of Britannica is available at Britannica.com and is free for a week beginning today. You can only read the first few paragraphs for free but for reading full reading full articles you need to switch for premium account.

As we know that Wikipedia is the largest online encyclopedia which is available for free. And the website of Wikipedia is also ad-free. Unlike Wikipedia, Britannica uses ads to monetize the website.
