Facebook overtakes Orkut in Brazil

Facebook has now overtaken Orkut in Brazil which was the only place where Orkut was popular. Facebook has doubled the users in december 2011 as compared to december 2012

Facebook has finally overtaken Google’s Orkut in Brazil. Now facebook has managed to be number one in most of the countries. Most of the countries where facebook is not at the top are those which has blocked this social network.

According to the latest ComScore report, Facebook has 36 million users in Brazil while orkut has only 34.4 million users in december 2011. Facebook has doubled its users in Brazil as compared to December 2010. Orkut has also seen 6 percent growth but it was not enough to save the number one crown.

“Facebook’s rapid ascent in the Brazilian market has certainly been one of the most interesting stories to develop during the course of 2011,” Alex Banks, comScore managing director for Brazil, said.

“Brazil has always been a particularly social market and currently owns the fifth largest social networking population in the world. But despite the cultural affinity for social media, Facebook adoption had traditionally lagged in the market,” he explained.
“That has all changed in the past year, during which the site has tripled in audience size as engagement has grown sevenfold to assume the leadership position in the market,” he added.

Orkut was only popular in India and Brazil. Facebook has overtaken Orkut in India last year and now in Brazil. Actually Google is trying to beat the facebook with Google+ which attracted 4.3 million visitors in Brazil in December 2011. ALthough this number is not enough to beat the facebook. But we can see it as the strart towards the fight.
